Wisconsin Cheese Production Similar to Last Year
Monday, July 7th, 2014 -- 1:16 PM
(Wisconsin Ag Connection) -Wisconsin's total cheese production in May was not much different than figures compiled during the same time last year. The USDA reports that the state's dairy plants produced 242.7 million pounds of cheese during the month, which was a slight 0.4 percent increase from May 2013 and 0.7 percent more compared to this past April, which is partly due to the fact that April had less days on the calendar.
Nationally, 965 million pounds of cheese was produced--about 2.2 percent more than May 2013, and 3.1 percent above the previous month's production totals.
Also, the USDA announced that the June Class III milk price was released at $21.36 per hundredweight. That's down $1.21 from last month, but still $3.34 above year-ago levels.
For the year, the Class III price has averaged $22.68.
The Class IV price was 48-cents higher than last month's price at $23.13, and was $4.25 more than last year's price for June.
