"Building Connections" Capital Campaign for the Marshfield Public Library and Community Center, Part 5

Tuesday, July 1st, 2014 -- 10:24 AM

-The public phase of the ?Building Connections? Capital Campaign for the Marshfield Public Library and Community Center was announced on Tuesday morning.

This is a project that has been many years in the making, but fundraising efforts for it began last fall. If the campaign can reach its fundraising goal, they hope to construct a new, two-story library, renovate the current library building, create a community center and connect both buildings with an enclosed entrance and lobby.

Lori Belongia, the library director, has been very impressed with the support the community has provided for this project.

Miss Belongia said, "Probably the best thing about being involved in this project is the wonderful support that this community has given to its library and continues to give. And not just financially. Being present in meetings and speaking out and sharing the importance of a library to a community with their friends and neighbors."

Miss Belongia said that the fundraising portion of this project may have only been happening for a short time, but the project itself has been in people minds for many years.

"While the fundraising has been going on for only a year," said Miss Belongia, "this project has been in the works for a long time. In fact, the first steps were purchasing a piece of property back in 1996. That was done after tremendous growth and upswings in usage. At that time, the library foundation and the City of Marshfield entered into a partnership, a 10 year land contract. And, during that time, usage continued to grow and when we finished the land contract in 2006 it was pretty obvious that it was time to start thinking seriously about moving on to a building process. So, in those intervening years, we've been working on this project for a long time."

Miss Belongia and the co-chairs of the campaign believe this new library and community center will open Marshfield up to many different opportunities.
