Seat Belt Law Celebrates 5 Years
Monday, June 30th, 2014 -- 10:12 AM
Wisconsin?s primary seat belt law has been in place for five years now.An estimated 83 percent of Wisconsin motorists buckle up ? an all-time high ? but still below the national average of 86 percent ? and well behind neighboring states that have safety belt use rates over 90 percent.
It?s estimated that a 10 percent increase in Wisconsin seat belt use would save 44 lives and prevent 650 injuries annually. Comprehensive public education and law enforcement efforts in Wisconsin are aimed at getting all travelers to buckle up, but many motorists still aren?t getting the message. Last year in Wisconsin, there were over 71,000 traffic convictions for failure to fasten a seat belt.
