Wisconsin's Tart Cherry Production Forecasted To Be Down

Sunday, June 29th, 2014 -- 8:29 AM

Wisconsin's tart cherry production is forecast to be at 11 million pounds this year--down slightly from last year when total output hit 12.4 million pounds, but still higher than the devastating 1.7 million harvested in 2012.

State agriculture officials say many trees were damaged during the harsh winter season, resulting in less yield potential.

Wisconsinagconnection.com reports that the national tart cherry production is expected to be around 264 million pounds. If realized, that would be 10 percent below the 2013 production.

Michigan, the largest producing state, expects a crop of 181 million pounds, down 17 percent from the revised 2013 figures. That state's cherries are said to be widely varied this year due to colder than normal weather leading to reports of winterkill and freeze.

Production forecasts are also lower in Washington, New York and Pennsylvania; but up in Utah and Oregon.**
