Half of Wisconsin Counties Issuing Same-Sex Marriage Licenses

-Over half of Wisconsin?s counties are issuing same-sex marriage licenses after an emergency stay blocking gay marriage in the state was denied. This all came about after a federal judge declared Wisconsin?s ban on gay marriage unconstitutional on Friday due to a lawsuit by the ACLU. After the ruling, same-sex couples in Madison and Milwaukee immediately began to receive marriage licenses.
Wisconsin?s Attorney General, J.B. Van Hollen, requested an emergency stay on the ruling blocking gay marriages in Wisconsin pending his appeal. In the wake of that appeal, counties were split on Monday regarding those that were and were not issuing the same-sex marriage licenses.
On Monday afternoon, a federal judge denied Van Hollen?s emergency stay as she wanted to give the ACLU time to draft an injunction before she decides on the stay. She also said that she was going to leave it up to the discretion of the counties as to whether or not they?ll issue same-sex marriage licenses.
Clark County is issuing same sex marriage licenses as are our surrounding counties of Jackson, Wood and Taylor. Chippewa, Eau Claire and Marathon Counties are not issuing the licenses.
