Wisconsin's Cheese Production Dropped Slightly in April

Saturday, June 7th, 2014 -- 6:31 AM

(Wisconsin Ag Connection) -Wisconsin's total cheese production in April dropped slightly from the same time a year ago.

The USDA reports that the state's dairy plants produced 241 million pounds of cheese during the month, which was a slight 0.3 percent decrease from April 2013 and 2.3 percent lower compared to this past March, which is partly due to the fact that April had less days on the calendar.

Nationally, 950 million pounds of cheese was produced--about 2.2 percent more than April 2013, but 2.8 percent below the previous month's production totals.

Wisconsin's production of American cheese decreased as the state produced 68.8 million pounds, about 8.5 percent less than last year, and 2.1 percent below last month's production. Cheddar output fell by 11.7 percent compared to 2013 to total 46.3 million pounds, and was 1.9 percent less than the month earlier.
