Neillsville Baseball Team Goes For Regional Title On Friday

-The Neillsville Baseball team picked up their 20th win of the year with a 15-7 Regional Semi-Final win over Melrose-Mindoro on Wednesday.Neillsville got off to a quick start scoring 6 runs on 5 hits in the first inning led by Nolan Matson who was 2 for 2 with 2 RBI's and a run scored. 11 batters came to the plate in the inning. The Warriors extended the lead to 8-0 with two more runs in the 2nd.
Melrose-Mindoro came back with 2 runs in the top of the 4th before Neillsville countered with 5 runs of their own in the bottom of the inning led again by Nolan Matson who had a 2 RBI triple.
With the lead 13-2 going into the 5th inning, coach Dave Matson brought in Nathan Peterson to relieve starter Sam Neville. Peterson struggled, allowing 5 runs on 3 hits and he walked two without getting an out. Neville came back to pitch with the bases loaded and nobody out. The Warriors got a double play and a flyout to finally end the inning but not before the Mustangs had cut the lead to 13-7.
The Warriors added two more runs in the 6th and Neville shut down the Mustangs the rest of the way for the win - 15-7.
Offensively the Warriors pounded out 18 hits led by Nolan Matson who went 5 for 5 with 4 RBI's and 2 runs scored. Jason Kurth was 3 for 4, Devon Opelt 3 for 5 and Nate McDonald was 2 for 3.
Neillsville (20-2) will now take on Whitehall, who beat Spencer 5-2, in the Regional Championship on Friday at Neillsville. Game time is 5 pm and you can hear it live on 1370 AM WCCN.
