Thursday, June 5th, 2014 -- 9:19 AM

(Wisconsin Ag Connection) -The total number of farms in Wisconsin in 2013 was 69,800, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service.

This is unchanged from the previous year, but a decrease of 1,400 farms from 2011. The drop in farm numbers came predominantly from operations with sales of agricultural products and government payments in the $1,000-$9,999 range.

Total land in farms in Wisconsin last year was also unchanged from the previous two years at 14.6 million acres. Farms in the $500,000 and over sales class increased by 400,000 acres between 2011 and 2013.

Wisconsin's average farm size in 2013 was 209 acres, unchanged from a year ago. The average farm size for those in the $500,000 and over economic sales class increased over the past five years from an average of 983 acres in 2008 to an average of 1,078 acres in 2013.
