Better Business Bureau of Wisconsin Warns Residents About Potential Summer Scams, Part 1
Wednesday, June 4th, 2014 -- 11:27 AM
-The Better Business Bureau of Wisconsin is warning residents about potential summer scams hitting the state. This warning came about after the Better Business Bureau of Wisconsin was contacted by a Stanley resident who was scammed out of a $30,000 car.
The man was put in touch with WQOW in Eau Claire to help spread the word. According to WQOW?s story, a company, calling themselves A&S Asphalt Paving, came to his door and told them they would repave and seal his driveway, a $20,000 job, in return for the street rod car he had parked in his driveway.
I spoke with Randall Hoth, President/CEO of the BBB, and he talked about the incident in more detail.
Mr. Hoth said, "There's a pattern here of a group of individuals that are from out of state that will show up at your property with unmarked trucks and, in cases that we've been hearing, will actually start doing work on your driveway. Unauthorized work, in most cases. And once they start doing this work, you come home or you come outside and say, 'well, we've done this demonstration patch for you, you're going to owe us $500, but I can see that your entire drive way needs work and therefore that's going to be a fairly substantial sum.' The numbers we're hearing are from $7,500 to $20,000."
He continued, "And our concern is that, number one, in the case reported in Stanley, if the individual would have stopped and said, 'I'm going to check the Better Business Bureau to check on this company,' which is using the name of A&S Asphalt Paving; they would have found that this company has a BBB grade of "F."
Mr. Hoth said it?s important that people do their research, get information and be a smart shopper before having any work done this summer.
