Head of Wisconsin DOT Says Don't Expect Toll Roads Any Time Soon

Tuesday, June 3rd, 2014 -- 1:01 PM

-The head of the Wisconsin Department of Transportation says drivers shouldn't expect toll roads on interstate highways any time soon.

Secretary Mark Gottlieb said he's looking for long-term solutions to a projected $680 million budget deficit by 2017 and toll roads aren't an immediate answer.

A transportation commission suggests fixing the projected $15.3 billion deficit over the next decade in part by increasing gas taxes and registration fees.

The National Highway Trust Fund is expected to dry up later this year. Congress is considering allowing states to toll interstates to help bridge an expected nationwide transportation budget squeeze.

Gottlieb says allowing states to toll roadways requires an act of Congress and other options could be put in place more quickly.
