Special Event Being Held at Historic Reed School June 5th

Friday, May 23rd, 2014 -- 11:40 AM

-The Historic Reed School will be holding a special event on Thursday, June 5th.

The Reed School Historic Site, located on Highway 10 three miles east of Neillsville, served as a country one-room schoolhouse from 1915 through 1951. The Reed School exemplifies the single room, multi-grade school that formed the basis of this nation?s educational system for rural children in the 19th and first half of the 20th century.

I spoke with Alan Hanson, a member of the Wisconsin Historical Society and Interim Director of the Reed School, and he told me about the event on June 5th.

Alan said, "On June 5th, from 2-4pm, we are going to be having a celebration of the Reed School. Since it has opened, Gordon has allowed some work to develop the basement into an exhibit not only about Reed School itself, but also about what students statewide would have experienced. So the event will be from 2-4pm out at the Reed School and we are going to be celebrating the opening of the exhibit and also thanking Gordon Smith for his support of the Reed School."

Mr. Hanson hopes that everyone will come out and enjoy the event on June 5th, but you can stop by the school every weekend from now until late October.

"The Reed School is open from 10am to 4pm every weekend from now until late October," said Alan. "And it is free and open to the public. We usually have an interpreter there who can talk about the school program, their experience working in area schools and attending a one room school."

Once again, the event is being held on June 5th from 2pm-4pm and you can tour the school, see the new exhibits and play trivia and other games to win prizes.
