Mock Tornado Watch and Warning Happening TODAY

Thursday, April 24th, 2014 -- 11:28 AM

-Clark County Emergency Management, Wisconsin Emergency Management, ReadyWisconsin and the National Weather Service have teamed up for Wisconsin?s Tornado and Severe Weather Awareness Week, this week, April 21st-25th.

John Ross, Clark County Emergency Management Director, talked about the mock tornado watch and warning taking place today.

John said, "The tornado drill itself is planned for Thursday, April 24th. There will be a mock tornado watch issued state wide at around 1pm and at approximately 1:45 then a mock tornado warning will be issued. If there is severe weather in the state of Wisconsin on Thursday, the drill will be postponed until Friday. If there's bad weather on Friday, then the drill will be canceled. Having said that, if there's cloudy skies, the drill will go on as planned, as long as there is no severe weather in the area."

John said there are many things you can do to be prepared if a tornado or severe weather hits.

"Don't hang around by large open areas," said John. "Don't stand under single trees. Get into a good, sturdy shelter. You don't know for sure what that storm is capable of and what it could be producing. If you're in a vehicle and severe weather hits, find shelter. One of the things that people use to talk about was going up under highway overpasses. That's not a good idea because that's a small space and the wind blows through there that much faster. Don't try to outrun a tornado. Use the outdoor warning sirens exactly in that way. They're outdoor warning sirens. If you're in your house, they're not meant to be the warnings you rely on. But don't necessarily wait for a warning. If you don't feel comfortable with a storm coming in, get to that place of safety or shelter."

Once again that mock tornado watch and warning will occur today, April 24th between 1pm-2pm.
