Crop Growers Saw a Wild Weather Week Last Week
Tuesday, April 22nd, 2014 -- 10:13 AM
(Wisconsin Ag Connection) -Crop growers saw every combination of weather patterns during the past week, but not enough warm sunshine and dry conditions to get much done in the fields. The weekly crop progress report from the Wisconsin Ag Statistics Service noted that freezing overnight temperatures and wintery precipitation stalled progress across much of the state early last week. A mid-week snowstorm dumped up to 20 inches of snow across the north, but reporters noted that warmer temperatures and rain over the weekend were melting snow cover quickly.
Average temperatures last week were four to seven degrees below normal; and precipitation totals ranged from 0.41 inches in Eau Claire to over three inches in Madison.
As of Sunday, spring tillage was three percent complete statewide, compared to 1 percent last year and a five year average of 23 percent. Oat plantings were just getting started, but is still behind the five year average of 35 percent.
Maple sap was still running in the far north, although reporters noted that trees in most areas have begun to bud, ending the sugaring season.
