Public Works Report at Neillsville City Council Meeting

Friday, February 28th, 2014 -- 11:08 AM

-The Neillsville City Council heard the Public Works Report at their meeting this week.

The big item that Public Works Director Dave Flynn talked about was the water crisis that gripped the city a couple weeks ago. Dave also said that when the warm weather arrives, they are expecting more line breaks as the ground shifts. In fact, the day before the meeting they had to fix a break on West 8th Street and had to fix a break near 1st and Oak Street Thursday.

There have been areas where the water laterals have frozen up, especially in the West 19th Street area, where the lines are very shallow. The department was able to thaw them or they bypassed them. If they bypass the lines, they connect two houses and average their water bill because they are unable to thaw them. Dave also said that it?s gotten to the point where they simply call a contractor to dig the frozen or broken lines because their equipment can?t handle it. Dave said there is 6ft of solid frost.

Dave also wanted to remind residents that Neillsville does NOT want them to run their water continually. They are going to continue to monitor the system and, if they find more pipes freezing all around Neillsville, they may ask residents to run water, but, for now, Neillsville does NOT want their residents to continually run their water.
