Saturday, February 15th, 2014 -- 6:56 AM
-The Owen-Withee School Board discussed the WASB Annual Education Convention at their Monday meeting.Board members Julie Wendler and Rick Eloranta attended the WASB Education Convention in Milwaukee in January. Rick reported on the Montessori school concept he saw for project based learning at the elementary school level. The concept of Montessori is to better engage the student to improve their performance.
Julie reported on the Performance Contracting that has resulted from Act 32. This law allows schools to levy outside the revenue limit for energy efficient projects. The school must hire a certified contractor to supervise the project and guarantee that the energy savings will create a cost savings that will pay for the project over time.
The board was made aware of the Zoning commission meeting that will be held on February 11th to discuss the rezoning of the Konwinski property which is located just to the west of the District?s property. The City of Owen is proposing change the zoning of this property from residential to commercial so that a Dollar Store can be built. The Board has considered the impact of a store being built so close to school. Members expressed that they have no reservations about the store and do not see it having a negative impact on the District. Individual Board members were invited to attend the zoning committee meeting if they so desired.
