February is Interfaith Volunteer Caregivers Awareness Month

Monday, February 10th, 2014 -- 1:26 PM

-February is Interfaith Volunteer Caregivers Awareness Month.

Judy Morrow, Director of Staff and Secretary of the Board for the Clark County Interfaith Volunteer Caregivers, explained who the Caregivers are.

"Interfaith Volunteer Caregivers of Clark County is an organization whose mission is to help the elderly stay in their homes as long as possible," said Judy. "So we wanna do, through volunteering, any kind of things that we can do to help them stay there so they don't have to go to assisted living or nursing homes or things like that. Are whole thing is to help people stay home as long as possible. Safely at home for as long as possible."

As a volunteer you can find a schedule that works for you whether it?s once a month, once a week or just once. Just checking in on your neighbor and helping can make a huge difference.

Interfaith Volunteers provide a lot of services.

Judy said, "I think a lot of it is just taking care of their daily needs like the lite housekeeping, the errands and the visits. Those are really the biggest things and advocacy too. In the summer time, there's lawns to be cut so if somebody likes to be outside there is always that thing they can do. We do go out and rake leaves and Spring is a lot of window washing and eaves cleaning and some yard pickup. Fall is, of course, many, many leaves have fallen. Respite care to some extent. The friendly visit where they go and check up on them and visit with them. Advocacy has become a really important part for us as well."

Judy said if you see someone that needs help, just ask them.

"Just look around you and see that person that maybe needs that help and knock on that door and offer because they're willing to take your help they just don't want to ask for it. And the other part is, if you know somebody who needs that help certainly call us because we will try our darndest to help with the situation."
