Tim Voigt of Custom Heating and Cooling Talks Propane Shortage, Part 3

Wednesday, January 29th, 2014 -- 1:40 PM

-As the long and harsh winter continues to tighten its icy grip on Central Wisconsin, many residents are facing not only higher priced propane, but a shortage as well.

Tim Voigt, owner of Custom Heating and Cooling in Neillsville, talked about what people can do to conserve propane during the shortage.

Mr. Voigt said, "The biggest thing that we want to do, in educating our consumers, we want to make sure that if anybody has any alternative fuel, by that I mean electric heat, wood heat, fuel oil, anything, you want to be careful and not use more LP than you have to. Like any shortage, you want to make sure that you ration. Keep your house warm, of course, but you want to make sure that you check the percentage in your tank daily and I say daily because, tap on your gauge because they might stick in this cold weather. You want to make sure you check the homes frequently. The other alternative would be to have electric space heaters, which I hate referring people to, because some of those aren't the safest. If you use a space heater make sure you secure it somehow so they can't tip over and be careful."

Gov. Scott Walker announced Monday the state will help propane dealers secure loans to purchase gas and release more money to help low-income propane users.
