Owen City Council Approves Hiring of New Police Officer

-The Owen City Council approved the hiring of a new police officer and the purchase of a new squad car at their meeting on Tuesday of last week.The council approved the recommendation of the Personnel Committee to hire as a full-time officer, Ryan Boie, at $16.00/per hour with a performance review at 6 months and wage review in 1 year. They also authorized Police Chief Schade to purchase a used Marathon County Squad car for $5,000 with the funding of two grants received by the Police Department from the Department of Justice Traffic Grant for $4,000 and from Enbridge for $1,000. The city is going to check on the cost of insurance.
Public Works Director Gary Smith reported that an employee, Richard Wilson, will be retiring in March of 2014. He said an ad should be run to create an eligibility list for public works employees. During the Public Opinion portion of the meeting, a Longwood resident mentioned there are lights burned out on the bike trail and street lights by Victory Clinic, Coleman and 4th, and 3rd and Pine.
