Tips To Stay Safe In The Bitter Cold

Saturday, January 4th, 2014 -- 8:25 AM

The Clark County Emergency Management Department along with Wisconsin Emergency Management has offered residents some tips to stay safe in the bitter cold.

Be on the alert for frostbite and hypothermia. Frostbite symptoms include loss of feeling and white, pale skin and hypothermia symptoms include shivering, exhaustion, confusion and others. Limit your time outdoors and seek medical assistance if you have any of these symptoms.

Carbon monoxide poisoning can occur with any type of heating system that burns fuel. Make sure you keep a device burning fuel well ventilated and if you start to get headaches, dizziness, shortness of breath or any other symptoms call 911 and get into fresh air.

You should also do what you can to keep you pets and livestock out of the cold. Provide fresh water and bedding, provide a wind break and keep an eye open for frostbite.

If you?re on the road have an emergency travel kit with you and avoid unnecessary travel when possible.

Take the dangers of these extreme conditions seriously and stay safe.
