Coldest Air Since The 90's Heading Our Way
Saturday, January 4th, 2014 -- 8:24 AM
Some of the coldest air since the mid-1990s will impact Central Wisconsin starting today and continuing into early next week.By later this afternoon, temperatures will be approaching zero and will dip below zero during the evening hours. The coldest and most harsh conditions are expected Sunday night into Monday, when air temperatures combined with winds will produce very dangerous wind chill values, in the range of -40 to -60.
Wind chill warnings have already been issued for the entire region, and go into effect this evening at 6pm, lasting until noon on Tuesday. Such low wind chill values can be life threatening, and certainly any exposed skin can freeze within as little as five minutes.
In early February 1996, Wisconsin experienced a record cold snap. The official state record low temperature was set in Couderay in Sawyer County on February 2nd and 4th at -55.
