-The new year will bring about a host of new laws that take effect tomorrow across the United States. In Colorado, pot stores will open their doors in the first state to legalize recreational marijuana. And Illinois becomes the 20th state to legalize pot. The laws still fly in the face of federal drug rules.
Guns in Connecticut that are considered assault weapons and large-capacity ammunition magazines must be registered with authorities or they'll be considered contraband. The law was passed in response to the Newtown mass school shooting.
Transgender students in California choose which restroom to use and whether to play on boys' or girls' sports teams, unless opponents can gather enough signatures for a referendum to overturn the law.
And photographers in California who harass celebrities and their children could face up to a year in county jail and a maximum $10,000 fine.
