Motor Vehicle Ordinance Hot Topic for Neillsville City Council

Tuesday, December 17th, 2013 -- 8:32 AM

-The Neillsville City Council continued to discuss a Motor Vehicle Ordinance at their meeting on Tuesday of last week.

During a prior meeting held at the end of November, a resident appeared before the common council asking them to review the city?s vehicle ordinance as he said there are many properties in the city that have a half dozen or more vehicles on them and in many cases the vehicles don?t work. The resident stated that it?s a nuisance and it lowers the property values of homes around them. He also stated that the city should only allow a certain number of vehicles on the property.

Neillsville?s Police Chief informed the council that as long as the vehicles are registered and licensed with the state they can be on the property. He also said it?s hard to regulate the number of vehicles on the property as items like campers, boats, trailers and other items are also considered vehicles. The city attorney said that a vehicle can?t be classified as a nuisance unless it is distinguished as a hazard in some way.

The citizen that brought this up at the prior meeting was present again and stated that the city should have an ordinance that only allows a specific number of vehicles on the property and he stated he will take legal action to make changes if necessary.

Also, one resident, whose property was mentioned specifically at the last meeting, was present and stated the information printed about him from the previous meeting was all lies and all of his vehicles are working. He collects and restores them. He also said he was upset about nobody coming to talk with him about this.

The item was tabled for the time being and it will be brought before the city?s planning commission.
