Congressmen Introduced Legislation to Establish a Dairy Pricing and Policy Commission
Saturday, July 3rd, 2021 -- 6:38 AM
A pair of Wisconsin congressmen have introduced legislation that would establish a Dairy Pricing and Policy Commission to recommend solutions to the issues facing family dairy producers.
Reps. Ron Kind of LaCrosse and Mike Gallagher from De Pere say their efforts would help evaluate and identify challenges and opportunities for new markets for dairy exports, respond to periods of heightened dairy production during low prices by considering better supply chain coordination, and consider Federal Milk Marketing Order reforms. Gallagher adds that Wisconsin farmers have faced historic challenges, highlighting the need to take action to identify and implement reforms to ensure dairy farmers have the tools they need to thrive.
The lawmakers say the commission would consist of a broad coalition of producers, processors, and other industry experts who would provide recommendations on how to address some of the biggest challenges facing the industry. Leaders from the Wisconsin Farm Bureau and Wisconsin Farmers Union have already come out in support of the measure. (Wisconsin Ag Connection)
