Governor Evers Signs Bill Regulating Use of Settlement Money From Opioid Manufacturers
Thursday, July 1st, 2021 -- 9:41 AM
(Bob Hague, WRN) -Governor Tony Evers signs a bill regulating the use of any settlement with opioid manufacturers, while raising concerns over its constitutionality. (Bob Hague)
Evers signed it, but said he considered parts of the new law unconstitutional, by interfering with the powers of prosecutors. The law will require the state to work with counties as they try to reach a settlement with opioid manufacturers and distributors.
Seventy percent of any settlement would go to local governments, 30 percent to the state. All the money would have to go toward efforts to address opioid abuse, and none could be diverted to other government programs.
