Marshfield Man Reaches Plea Deal
Saturday, October 19th, 2013 -- 7:17 AM
A Marshfield man accused of beating his girlfriend to death has reached a plea deal in lieu of another trial that was granted to him.In 2009, Eric Mayer, age 32, was charged with the death of his girlfriend Cynthia Tyler. Mayer told investigators that he hit her in the face after she had kicked him in the mouth. When Mayer hit her, Tyler was knocked unconscious and she later died of a rupture artery in her brain.
In March of 2010, a plea deal was reached and Mayer pleaded no contest to felony murder. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison.
Mayer has now appealed the conviction saying he had ineffective counsel. Mayer?s attorney had been undergoing treatment for cancer at the time and has since died.
Mayer?s new trial was set to begin on Monday and run through Thursday of next week. Now, however, a plea/sentencing hearing has been scheduled for Monday
