Sunday, September 29th, 2013 -- 9:09 AM
-Governor Scott Walker has proclaimed September 30th to October 6th as Rustic Roads Week in Wisconsin. The first-ever state proclamation marks the 40-year anniversary of 'Wisconsin's' Rustic Roads program. In 1973, the State Legislature created the program, which is administered by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation.
Currently, there are 114 designated Rustic Roads spanning more than 663 miles through 59 counties. Rustic Roads are marked with brown and yellow road signs. They are assigned a number based on their addition to the statewide system. The one to three digit number has a letter ?R? prefix. The first approved route, R-1, is in Taylor County; the most recent, R-114, is in Rusk County.
?We encourage people to explore Wisconsin Rustic Roads, especially during this colorful time of year,? Wisconsin DOT Secretary Mark Gottlieb said. ?We are proud of the program?s 40-year history and pleased to see Rustic Roads in the statewide spotlight this week.?
