-The Jackson County Sheriff?s Department has taken a person of interest regarding a disappearance into custody. On Monday the Jackson County Sheriff?s Office was contacted regarding a welfare check on a 57-year-old Brian Helgeson who had not been heard from in over a week. The family member that called also said they were worried about Helgeson?s son, 20-year-old Lars Helgeson.
Lars Helgeson was considered a person of interest in the investigation and police were concerned as it was indicated that Lars may be mentally unstable and that he was armed with two firearms. It was also believed that Lars was operating a stolen vehicle, a 1980 Chevy Suburban.
Wednesday afternoon the Sheriff?s Department received a tip about the stolen vehicle Lars was in. When they found the vehicle a suspect, believed to be Helgeson, was spotted fleeing into the wood. The Jackson and Trempealeau County Sheriff?s Departments, the State Patrol and agents from the Wisconsin Department of Justice flooded the woods looking for Helgeson.
As light began to fade for the day, the departments received a report that a juvenile had walked by a citizen?s home with his hands in the air. It was Lars Helgeson and he was arrested without incident.
Helgeson was unarmed and he?s currently being held in the Jackson County Jail on felony vehicle theft charges. A press conference will be held at 11am today with more information.
