Neillsville School Board Takes Action Against Unsafe Homecoming Behavior

Wednesday, September 25th, 2013 -- 11:41 AM

-The Neillsville School Board took action on Monday night, hoping to keep students from preforming unsafe behavior during their Homecoming next week.

In the past, there have been issues with trespassing and toilet papering in the city during homecoming resulting in many complaints from city residents.

During the Neillsville School Board Meeting on Monday, the board decided to take a stand regarding these issues.

"The board did decide that we would take a stand on, number 1, behavior and number 2, safety. We know that kids safety is at risk when they're running around in the dark and jumping into cars, taking off. We just want kids to be safe and smart about what they do. The board did say that if we do start to get complaints about the kids, we will start taking away homecoming events that our school sponsors. But, again it's not an effort to penalize. We're just doing it to make sure our kids are safe."

If the district did receive some complaints, they would remove the activities of homecoming on a step-by-step basis.

"We would do it on a step-by-step basis. The first thing we would take away is the "daily" in school activities. The kids have dress up days and they try and get all the classes involved. The next thing we would take away is the after school activities. We have powder puff football and boys volleyball and those type of things. If multiple complaints were to come in, we would take away the dance for homecoming. Hopefully, the kids don't force us into doing that and again, it's an effort to keep them safe."

As Mr. Gaier mentioned, the reason behind this stance is not to penalize, but to make sure that kids are safe during the homecoming week.
