Marshfield Man's Trial Cancelled, Plea Deal Reached, Sentencing Date Set

-A Marshfield man?s trial for punching his pregnant girlfriend in the stomach and threatening to light her on fire has been cancelled.Wednesday was supposed to be day one of a three day trial for Tyler Ress, age 23. Instead he entered a no contest plea to second-degree recklessly endangering safety, strangulation and suffocation and false imprisonment in a plea bargain in which four other charges were dismissed.
Back in September of last year, Ress punched a 28-year-old pregnant Marshfield woman multiple times to try and make her miscarry. He then doused her in gasoline, threatening to light her on fire. Ress and his victim have had several instances of violence against one another.
This morning, in the Wood County Court, Damon Stichert asked for a continuance before the trial began saying he hadn?t received all the information, more specifically a DVD of an interview the police had with Ress? victim last week. He also questioned the reliability of the witness as she frequently recanted her statements.
State Prosecutor Craig Lambert didn?t want the trial to be delayed any further as he worried about what kind of further abuse the victim was suffering from Ress as he was allegedly continuing to have contact with his victim even though he wasn?t supposed to.
In the end, Judge Nicholas Brazeau Jr. said he wanted to see this DVD interview as well and depending on what was on it would depend on whether or not the trial will continue. The trail was called off and a sentencing hearing was scheduled for October.
