State Trout Sales Down in 2020

(Wisconsin Ag Connection) Wisconsin fish farmers are reporting $1.42 million in trout sales during 2020, a seven percent decrease from the previous year.

According to the Wisconsin Ag Connection, that's according to the state's agriculture department, which stated sales of trout greater than 12 inches long totaled $1.31 million, which was also off by seven percent.

The agency says the number of trout sold greater than 12 inches long were down by 30,000 to 300,000 fish. The total live weight of trout sold in this size category was 291,000 pounds.

Producers received just two-cents per pound more in 2020, getting an average of $4.51 per pound in this size class.  Producers raising trout for sale lost 244,000 fish weighing a total of 63,000 pounds to various causes last season.

The number of trout lost was 22,000 less than last year, and the total weight of the fish lost fell by 7,000 pounds.  Nationally, the total value of fish sales received by trout growers in the United States totaled 94.6 million dollars for 2020, a decrease of 13 percent from the previous year.

The average price per pound was $1.97, up two percent from 2019.
