Busy Roadways for the Labor Day Weekend

Tuesday, August 27th, 2013 -- 8:31 AM

-Going somewhere fun for Labor Day? You won't be alone.

With an improved housing market and optimism about the economy, more Wisconsinites are planning to get out of town over the holiday weekend than in any Labor Day since before the recession, AAA Travel predicts, even as the average costs of airfares, hotels and car rentals rise.

An estimated 713,000 Wisconsinites will hit the road this weekend, a post-recession peak that's 3.4% higher than last year. About 638,000, or nearly 90%, are expected to journey by car, while only about 26,000 will fly.

Nationwide, AAA estimates 34.1 million Americans will travel at least 50 miles from home, a 4.2% increase from last year. Around 29 million, or 85%, will be driving.

Not only are more people leaving home, but they also are expected to spend more money, as key costs in travel go up.

Even though most people consider gasoline prices over $3.50 "too high," current gas prices aren't likely to deter anyone who wants to take a trip, because they are lower than they were in 2012, according to AAA Wisconsin.
