January Monthly Milk Production Report

(Wisconsin Ag Connection) -Total milk production in America's Dairyland rose during the month of January when compared to the same time last year.

According to the USDA's monthly milk production report, Wisconsin farmers produced 2.66 billion pounds during the month, up three percent from last January and higher than the 2.60 billion made in December 2020.  Nationally, 18.3 billion pounds of milk was produced in the 24 major dairy states for the month. That was a 1.8 percent increase from 2020, and more than the previous month's 18.1 billion.  Meanwhile, the number of milk cows on farms in the 24 major states was 8.93 million head, 92,000 head more than January 2020, and 6,000 head more than December 2020.

The average number of milk cows on Wisconsin farms for the month was 1.26 million head, about 2,000 head more than last month and last year. Monthly production per cow averaged 2,105 pounds, which was 60 pounds per cow more than last year's figures.
