A Change to Neillsville's School Day for 2013-2014

Tuesday, April 16th, 2013 -- 11:02 AM

-The Neillsville School District will see a change to their school day for the 2013-2014 school year.

At the Monday School Board meeting, the board approved the district to proceed with a 7 period day compared to the 8 period day the district currently has. However, the board asked Mr. Anderson, Neillsville?s Principal that started the initiative, to work on the intervention period that is included in this new schedule. This new day would only apply to grades 7-12.

This new schedule would include 50 minute class periods compared to the usual 45, but the biggest change would be the new intervention period added to the schedule. This intervention time would be used by students that are struggling in a core subject, like Math or English, to receive face time with a teacher of that subject to get help.

Even though study hall would theoretically no longer exist, students that don?t need an intervention in a specific core class would use the intervention time as a study hall. If a student was struggling in more than one subject, the teachers would have to prioritize and choose a specific subject over another to help the student.

One of the biggest concerns regarding this new day was the start time. Mr. Anderson suggested having the school day start at 8:00am and ending at 3:15. However, several board members were concerned about the students that live in the rural areas of the district, especially small children, having to be up even earlier to get on the bus.

Mr. Anderson said the start and end time could be adjusted if it works better for parents and students.
