A State Deer Hunters Forum Held In Neillsville
Thursday, March 28th, 2013 -- 10:24 AM
Twenty people attended one of the state Deer Hunters forums in the Neillsville school auditorium Tuesday evening. The forums are an effort to gain input from the public for the 2014 deer season and determine what fits for Wisconsin hunters. The forum was coordinated by Tim Babros and Kris Johansen-Department of Natural Resources area wildlife supervisors and began with a brief presentation followed by discussion.
Concerns and suggestions expressed by the audience were: encourage youth and female involvement in the gun season, study predator issues in areas with low deer count and provide more education about predators, resolve the feeding and baiting issue, land fragmentation, and possibly extend the deer gun season although historically strong opposition has come from the bow hunter association and issues regarding the Thanksgiving tradition.
The 2013 Deer Hunters forums are part of the DNR?s effort to implement Dr. James Kroll?s 62 recommendations for Wisconsin deer hunting and management. Following the forums, action teams will be developed early in April and anyone can participate on the teams that address deer management assistance program, herd health, regulations and season, and science research.
