Heated Conversation at Friends of the Fairgrounds Meeting

Tuesday, March 26th, 2013 -- 8:17 AM

-The conversation got a bit heated at Monday?s Friends of the Fairgrounds meeting.

The group talked about the minor projects that will be done when the weather clears, a possible new sign, and the progression of the PA project.

It was at this point the meeting derailed from the agenda when a private citizen voiced his concern as to whether or not the Friends of the Fairgrounds group was stepping on the toes of the Clark County Fair Board.

The citizen said, ?My impression was that this group was going to try and help improve the fairgrounds to bring in other events. We have a fair board. Let them have the fair. Plus, before we take about any big changes, we need to make sure it?s okay with the Forestry and Parks Department.?

Sheila Nyberg, Co-Chair of the Friends of the Fairgrounds group, then countered his statement with her own.

?Let me be perfectly clear,? Sheila said, ?It is not our intention to take over the Clark County Fair. We are just coming up with ideas to bring to the fair board to help them in any way we can. We are also trying to find ways to improve the grounds so we can bring others events to the county which is beneficial to everybody. But it isn?t going to help us if we can?t stop and talk about short term and long term projects for the grounds.?

Sheila continued, ?Partnerships are the key here. Look what happened when everyone worked together. We got a new PA system. Those partnerships are going to be vital in moving forward.?

After the heated discussion, it was decided that an inventory was needed going forward so the Parks Department has information for events that may want to use the fairgrounds.
