Owen-Withee Referendum, Part 2

Monday, March 25th, 2013 -- 8:28 AM

-Bob Houts, District Administrator for the Owen-Withee School District, presented information to Owen-Withee residents on the referendum the district is hoping to pass April 2nd.

The resolution will be asking Owen-Withee residents to approve 8 million dollars for various remodeling, renovations, additions, and other work on the school district.

The district began talking about improving the school back in 2010. The board asked themselves and the community: where do we want the district to go? One item identified was the building itself. As the building is over 50 years old, the district decided it was time to make renovations. Within the past year, an architect then came to the district and offered remodeling suggestions and plans.

Some of the main renovations and work to be done include the gym and the surrounding area. The kitchen and cafeteria would be moved to consolidate the food service area, renovate the gym itself, which Mr. Houts mentioned would include redoing the floor and bleachers, and add additional locker rooms, and have an improved wellness/fitness/weight room for the students and the community. Bob did note that they wouldn?t have the weight room open for the community right away because they don?t want to drive the local fitness center out of business.

Another big area the district would improve is the Ag and Tech Ed area. The area would be renovated to include better equipment and a more adequate power supply for 21st Century needs. They would also add more to the Ag curriculum and address space needs. The new room would help kids focus on a technical career in manufacturing, engineering, or similar career path.
