Busy Night At Tuesday's Neillsville City Council Meeting

Wednesday, March 13th, 2013 -- 10:14 AM

It was a busy night for the Neillsville City Council on Tuesday with the Christie Building a hot topic.

During the appearances portion of the meeting, Dan Clough, a member of the Neillsville Improvement Commission, presented the council with a letter he sent to the courts regarding the Christie Building. Dan highlighted portions of the letter saying that ?time is of the essence? and they don?t want the building torn down. Dan hoped that the city could convey to the judge just how important the building is.

The city attorney then pointed out that even if the building is put into receivership, they can?t immediately being repairs or sell the building. ?It?s not as easy as everyone seems to think it is,? she said.

Even if the building were put into receivership, which may not happen if the judge decides to give the owners more time to make improvements, the city would have to sell the building to an uninterested party. Not someone who wants to buy it immediately and only if the owner decides to sell it and it must be sold for fair market price.

?The law is the law,? the city attorney said, ?and we can?t just take someone?s property."
