-Today is National Wear Red Day.The National Wear Red Day was launched in 2003 and it is an American Heart Association event to raise awareness about heart disease and stroke risks for women.
Brittany Mews, a Public Health Nurse at the Clark County Health Department, brought attention to the statistics regarding the number of women that die by heart disease and strokes. "Heart disease is the number one cause of death in women. Stroke is the number three cause of death. 1 in 31 American women die of breast cancer each year. However, 1 in 3 women die of heart disease, killing approximately one women every minute. State health officals are urging women to learn about heart disease and make lifestyle changes to reduce your risk."
Heart disease claims the lives of nearly 500,000 Americans each year. Brittany said the campaign is very important. "In 2003 the American Heart Association started a campaign called "Go Red for Women" to educate women on heart disease, help women come together to show their support for one another and also to increase funding for treatments for those in need."
Brittany gave a list of things you can do to help prevent heart disease. "Some of the important lifestyle changes you can make to reduce your risk of heart disease include not smoking, eating for heart health, aim for a healthy weight, and get moving."
Those are just a few of the items Brittany listed. If you?d like to know more you can check the Clark County Health Department?s website.
