-The state has approved the City of Greenwood to construct four new wells and upgrade the water treatment storage facilities. Two years ago, the DNR had shut down the output of three shallow wells due to contamination. The city?s supply is fine for every day needs, but if a big business revs up production or a well goes down, the city needs a backup supply.
Greenwood had nine wells in operation before the DNR had shut a few of them down. The city will need at least four more to meet state supply standards. The state approved the city to spend 1.96 million dollars on the construction of the new wells.
The new wells will be west of its current well field along Highway G. The city bought 50 acres to site the new wells, which will be drilled in April and connected to the water plant. Various treatment and disinfection equipment will be added to treat the water before it?s pumped to a reservoir.
The city will get financing with the state Safe Drinking Water Loan Program for much of the cost of the improvements.
Last week, the city filed a rate application seeking a 60 percent increase in revenue.
Residential customers already pay about $65 quarterly for 15,000 gallons of water. If approved as submitted, that quarterly water bill would increase to about $108.
