Shop Local 30 Campaign Data, Day 2

Tuesday, December 4th, 2012 -- 8:33 AM

-We have more on the Shop Local campaign data for you.

Keep in mind, that the data showed the main participants in the study were ?blue collar? workers ages 51-60. It also showed that over 8,000 dollars is leaving the City of Neillsville.

This is based off of the small portion of people that participated in the month long study. If you applied that to the entire population, you would see some truly staggering numbers regarding the money being spent outside the local community.

The Shop Local 30 concept had emerged from the Neillsville Area Chamber of Commerce?s leadership team discussion and the initial goal was simple: to boost retail sales revenue by increasing Neillsville residents? knowledge of products available locally and provide valuable feedback to retailers.

The campaign also helped raise awareness of hidden costs. ?There are additional costs related to shopping outside of your hometown,? said Deanna Heiman, Executive Director of the NACC. ?Using the federal mileage reimbursement rate of 55 cents per mile, a trip to a neighboring city to save a few dollars can cost you more in the end.? That?s not to mention the time involved, which is a precious commodity to some.

The results of the campaign also shed light on potential economic development opportunities for the Neillsville community.

In examining specific data regarding purchases made outside of the city on 154 occasions, the top four shopping destinations were: Marshfield (33.12%), Eau Claire (22.73%), Black River Falls (5.19%), and Granton (5.19%).

Online purchases were also captured and accounted for 12.99% of the 154 occasions.
