Black River Memorial Hospital to Open New Wound Care Center in May

Black River Memorial Hospital will open a new Wound Care Center in May offering advanced wound care for people with acute and chronic problem wounds.

BRMH partnered with Healogics, the nation’s leading provider of advanced wound care services. The center will be located in the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Department and will be comprised of an expert team including a program coordinator, physician medical director, advance practice providers, and nursing staff.

The center greatly advances BRMH’s wound-care treatment capabilities. “The new, comprehensive care we now can offer patients by having medical providers as part of our Wound Care Center really brings out a whole new realm of possibilities,” said Carmen Liebelt, Wound Care Center coordinator.

She continued, “We’re going to be able to give patients the care that they need. And that care will be close to home, reducing the need for local patients to travel for advanced wound care.”

Possible candidates for treatment at the Center are those suffering from diabetic ulcers, pressure ulcers, infections, compromised skin grafts and flaps, vascular-related ulcers, and wounds that haven’t healed within a reasonable time frame.

People with wounds that have not improved with traditional methods of treatment may benefit from a visit to the Wound Care Center. It is estimated that chronic wounds affect 6.7 million people in the U.S., and that number is rising, fueled by an aging population and increasing rates of conditions such as diabetes, obesity, and the late effects of radiation therapy.

If left untreated, chronic wounds can lead to diminished quality of life and possibly amputation of the affected limb.  No referral is necessary to receive treatment at the Wound Care Center.
