A Night Fit For A King In Neillsville

Junior Alex King scored a game high 33 points, made the game winning lay-up and scored his 1,000th career point as Neillsville downed Colby 103-101 in double overtime at the Fieldhouse on Friday night.

The Warriors led at the half 37-34 in a back and forth first half. King led the way for the Warriors with 18 points.

In the second half, Colby had a 16-4 run to start the half to take a 9 point lead. They would go up by as many as 12 in the half before Neillsville found their range outside and were able to tie the score at 80-80 after regulation. In the second half, King scored his 1,000th career point when he scored his 26th point in the game. Alex is the 1st boy to score 1,000 points as junior in the history of NHS Boys Basketball.

The first overtime was a see-saw affair as Neillsville was able to get up by 3 late, but a 3 pointer by Matthew Roth tied the score at 90 to send it to a second overtime. The second overtime was much of the same as the teams traded leads and Neillsville went up by 3 late in the overtime and Roth again hit a 3 pointer to tie the score at 101 with 4.5 seconds left. On the inbound, King drove the floor and made a layup in traffic as the horn sounded and Neillsville got the win.

King led all scorers with 33 points, Monte Diestler had six 3 pointers in the game to finish with 21 points, Braden Trunkel had 15 points, Hunter Hand had 13 points and Issac Weiers added 10 points.
Harley Schmelzer led Colby with 25 points, Matthew Roth had 23 points, Matthew Stewart had 22, 18 of the those in the second half, Sawyer Stuttgen had 12 points and Alex Schmitt added 11 points.

Neillsville improved to 11-2 in the Eastern Cloverbelt Conference and 13-4 overall. Colby falls to 5-7 in the ECC and 5-11 overall.
