Mosinee Man Accused of Stabbing a Police Officer Makes Initial Appearance

(Mike Leischner, WSAU) The Mosinee man accused of stabbing a police officer made his initial appearance on Tuesday.

According to Mike Leischner with WSAU, court records show Randy Beardsley is formally facing two felony charges for battery against a law enforcement officer and substantial battery with the intent to cause great bodily harm along with a misdemeanor count for resisting or obstructing an officer.

He waived his right to a reading of the charges but did not waive his right to a speedy trial. Investigators say Beardsley was passed out near the intersection of 7th and Main.

The officer approached him to perform a welfare check on him, and he allegedly got up and stabbed him with an unidentified sharp object. The officer suffered non-life-threatening injuries from the incident and has since recovered.

The officer called for backup, including a Marathon County K9 unit. The dog was deployed, injuring the suspect. He was hospitalized but also recovered. The incident happened during one of the coldest nights of the year in Central Wisconsin.

Air temperatures that night were in the single digits below zero, with wind chill readings well below that. Beardsley is being held on a $100,000 cash bond, which he has yet to post.

Should he bond out he would have a full restraining order against the victim and would have to maintain absolute sobriety from drugs and alcohol. Further hearings are scheduled for February 16th and 21st.

A pretrial conference will be held on March 8th. Beardsley is awaiting a public defender and has not yet entered a plea to the charges. He faces up to nine and a half years in prison if found guilty.
