Tourism Matters in the State of Wisconsin

-Recent numbers released by the Wisconsin Department of Tourism has proven that tourism matters in Wisconsin.

Wisconsin had $21.6 billion in tourism spending in 2018, with an increase of $13.3 billion in visitor spending. Just over 199,000 jobs, or 1 in 13, is sustained due to tourism activity and it generates $1.6 billion in state and local taxes and $1.2 billion in federal taxes. Wisconsin had 112 million visitors in 2018. 27% of visitor spending went to lodging, 26% to food and beverage, 20% to retail, 13% to transportation and 14% to recreation. Wisconsin’s tourism industry sees a Return on Investment of 7 to 1, or $7 in tax revenue per $1 promotional money spent at the state level and 89 to 1, or $89 in tax revenue per $1 promotional money spent on the national level. Wisconsin residents would have to pay an extra $680 per household to maintain the current level of government service generated by tourism.

Clark County’s total business sales were $54.4 million in 2018. 352 jobs with a total personal income of $6.8 million were supported by visitors to Clark County last year. Visitors to Clark County generated $3 million in state and local taxes during 2018, which was an increase of 6%. Also in 2018, Clark County saw an 11% increase in total room tax revenue.
