First of Two Public Information Sessions on Wausau School District’s April Referendum Being Held Tonight

Wednesday, February 26th, 2025 -- 8:01 AM

(Mike Leischner, WSAU) The first of two public information sessions on the Wausau School District’s April 1st funding referendum will be held Wednesday.

According to Mike Leischner with WSAU, leaders will gather at the West High School Auditorium for a short presentation and question-and-answer session beginning at 5:30 PM. The session is designed to allow voters to get all the information they need to make an informed decision when they vote on April 1st.

The referendum seeks approval for an $8 million increase in the district’s operating budget, though school leaders have emphasized that would not come with an immediate tax increase.

That’s due to the way the district has pre-paid debt, allowing them to take the $8 million from debt servicing and place it in the general budget. Leaders have warned that not passing the referendum would lead to drastic cuts to staff and student programs as the district faces a looming budget shortfall.

The second public information session is scheduled for March 11th at the East High School library. The district has also mailed informational postcards to voters and has more information available at wausauschools.org.
