DNR: FIRE DANGER 'VERY HIGH'

Posted by Riley Hebert-News Director

Burning permits are being suspended as DNR officials warn of “very high” fire danger.

Annual and regular burning permits have been suspended in the Wisconsin Rapids and Black River Falls DNR fire protection areas, forestry leaders announced Monday.

In Wisconsin Rapids Area this includes Adams, Portage, and parts of Juneau, Wood, and Marathon counties. In Black River Falls this includes parts of Monroe, Jackson, Clark, Eau Claire and Chippewa counties.

A special burning permit may be issued by the local DNR Forest Ranger for resource management such as prescribed burning or for circumstances involving activities such as agriculture and land clearing when the burning can be done safely and cannot be postponed.

These restrictions are likely to last for the next 3-4 weeks when the region experiences the peak of the spring forest fire season and risk to public safety can increase quickly, officials said.

This spring, debris burning has caused 49 forest fires accounting for almost half of the forest fires in the DNR protection areas in the West Central Region and is the number one cause of forest fires.

The DNR will notify the public when annual and regular burning permits will be allowed.
