COMPENTENCY EXAM ORDERED FOR SPENCER MAN
Thursday, April 6th, 2006 -- 6:29 am
Posted by Riley Hebert-News Director

A judge wants to know if the Spencer man accused of killing his wife last month is competent to stand trial.

Authorities say 38-year-old Patrick Zurkowski shoved a plate shaped like an Easter Bunny down June Zurkowski’s throat. After the woman choked to death, Zurkowski called a local funeral home to report his wife had died suddenly. They became suspicious and called authorities, who arrested the man that day.

Zurkowski initially said he had killed his wife in self-defense, and had to be tasered twice after resisting arrest.

A Marathon County judge Wednesday ordered a competency evaluation for Zurkowski, who is being held on a $1-million cash bond.
