LEGION VOTES TO MOVE FORWARD WITH BUILDING

Two members of the Neillsville American Legion Post 73 joined us on Viewpoint Tuesday morning to make a special announcement concerning their proposed new Legion Hall.

“Last night, we had our monthly meeting. The vote was 46-1 to go forward with the new building and all four (Neillsville) banks are behind us,” announced Post Commander Rick Thoma, who added he was somewhat “surprised” – but pleased – the membership showed such overwhelming support for the project.

A ceremonial groundbreaking was held in September at the facility’s future location in the Boon Commercial Park, but the estimated cost of the project jumped from around $750,000 to a current estimate of almost $1.2-million.

Legion member Dewey Seelow explained he understood the public had some expectations construction would have started sooner.

“Unfortunately, the bids didn’t come in exactly where we wanted,” Seelow explained. “We can’t build what we don’t have (funds for).”

“I just want to thank all the contractors that were a part of this already. It wasn’t a choice of (who is) more popular – it’s just whatever’s best for the community,” Seelow said.

Thoma estimated construction will begin in a week-and-a-half and should be complete in time for the fall fish fry season. The 14,000 square-foot facility will be handicap accessible and able to host 400 people.
