Some area dairies faired very well at last week's World Champion Cheese Contest in Madison.

While the top prize went to a Swiss Cheese from Switzerland, Wisconsin cheese companies took top honors in 19 different classes this year.

Among the winning Wisconsin entries were: Welcome Dairy Colby’s pasteurized process cheeses and flavored pasteurized process cheeses and Grassland Dairy in Greenwood’s unsalted butter – in fact, Grassland swept the top three spots in the unsalted butter category.

Companies representing the Dairy State also took second place in 16 different categories, and third place in 13 areas of the competition.

Dave Lindgren and Jerry Fredrick of Lynn Dairy took third place for their Mild Cheddar and Monteray Jack, respectively.

The contest featured nearly 1,800 entries from 18 nations, breaking the previous record of 1,280 items in 2004.
