Snow Removal Discussed at Neillsville City Council Meeting

-Snow removal was discussed at the Neillsville City Council Meeting on Tuesday.

Dave Flynn, Director of Public Works for Neillsville, went over the usual amount of cleaning and work done in the city including the maintaining of the Christmas decorations, street sweeping, equipment maintenance, and more.

Dave also presented the council with a list of sidewalks that had not been cleared of snow after Sunday’s snowstorm moved through the area.

The city has an ordinance that says the sidewalks must be clean 24 hours after we receive snow.

Some of the properties on Dave’s list were vacant homes either owned by the bank or just abandoned. Other properties had shoveled snow, but had only done the middle of the sidewalk and not the whole thing, which isn’t effective because that causes slippery conditions when the snow melts and then freezes again.

Dave sent out a final notice to the residents and the locations letting them know that the next time the sidewalks aren’t clean after 24 hours, they will be fined. He also noted that some of the properties on his list had cleaned the sidewalks already after receiving the notice.

Dave said that many of the properties on his list are repeats and it is tiring, because it takes the public works crew 12 to 15 hours to take care of the city property. He also said that if the city has to clean a sidewalk for somebody, they fine the property 100 dollars plus charge them 30 dollars per hour for labor.

All of these measures are done for safety reasons as the city could be held liable if somebody gets hurt on city property.

Mayor Mabie offered his compliments to Dave and his crew for the efficient and quick clean up. He also hoped that residents with fire hydrants on their property will take time to clean around those for safety reasons.
